What Makes Woodstock Unique?

  • Opera House - is a fully modernized theatre, without sacrificing its historical authenticity. It features contemporary sound, lighting, stage rigging, heating, air-conditioning and other amenities.
  • "Groundhog Days" - at the beginning of every February, including tours of famous filming sites from the movie since Woodstock was the primary filming location for the 1993 movie Groundhog Day. The town now even has its own groundhog named "Woodstock Willie", who essentially performs the same tasks as "Punxsutawney Phil" at the site of the original Groundhog Day festival. Every year on the weekend of Groundhog Day, the Classic Cinemas Woodstock Theater shows Groundhog Day for free. A new tradition that Woodstock has added is the annual groundhog lighting on Groundhog Day.
  • National Register of Historic Places - The Old McHenry County Courthouse has been listed since November 1, 1974. Today the courthouse is occupied by various private tenants including a restaurant and an art gallery. It is one of the key structures in the Woodstock Square Historic District
  • The Chester Gould-Dick Tracy Museum - filled with child-friendly hands-on exhibits including forensics, identification measures and drawing techniques. In 2000, this innovative room received a "Superior Achievement Award" from the Illinois Association of Museums and in 2001, received the "Award of Excellence" from the Illinois State Historical Society.
